Hope on Alvarado is not only a hope for homeless in Los Angeles where approximately 46, 874 people struggle with homelessness but may also throw open the doors for new way of building affordable houses. The five-story building, to be built on 0.44 acre land, will contain studio and one-bedroom apartments, ranging from 400 to 480 square feet. What makes it different from other affordable houses is the material used for building the structure – shipping containers will be used as primary building material. Every resident will have their own bike parking space and access to a central courtyard. The staff on the ground-floor will also offer support services to tenants.

Local architecture firm KTGY Architecture + Planning has designed an affordable micro-apartment complex that will start housing dozens of LA’s homeless residents by 2019. The project which creatively repurposes shipping containers into a modern and affordable transitional housing community is being developed by Aedis Real Estate Group. Work on the project will commence in 2018. The complex will have 84 units and will serve as affordable transitional housing for the homeless.
